Wang Jianan used to compete in the decathlon and especially did well in pole vault. He set a PB of 5.00m in 2012 when he was only 15-years old. But he realised he had even more talent for the long jump event. He came into the spotlights by winning the Asian Championships in 2013 with a personal best of 7.95m. One year later he won his first global title and became the World Junior Champion in Eugene.

As a 20-year-old Jianan Wang improved his personal best at the Diamond League in Shanghai to 8.25m. Only a few months later he claimed the bronze medal at the World Championships in Beijing.
