Stephen Kiprotich

Cheptiyal village (Kapchorwa District) born Kiprotich is one of the most friendly athletes with a sparkling personality. He always finds a way of making people laugh with his sense of humor. Determination and dedication are the key to Stephen’s success in running. Making the choice to move to Kenya on a young age to focus on a better chance on a good running career. He ran his first International race at the World Championships Cross Country in Fukuoka Japan in 2006, he finished 24th in the junior competition.


After a few years on the track, Stephen choose to run road race in the fall of 2010, finishing second in the Reims Half Marathon. After finishing sixth in the 2011 World Championships Cross, Stephen came to Enschede Marathon to pace the group through 30km. Doing so in a very easy and smooth way he decided to finish the race, that’s how he broke the course record by over 1,5 minute.


In 2012 Stephen ran the Tokyo marathon and he finished third. He easily made the Olympic team for London and in London Stephen showed that everything can happen in an Olympic marathon. He left the Kenyans behind and won the golden medal for Uganda!


After his golden medal at the Olympics, Stephen focused on the 2013 London marathon. He returned to London where he became sixth in one of the strongest marathon fields ever. After London he set his focus on the World Championships in Moscow, where he wanted to become the second athlete ever to win the world title only one year after winning the Olympic title. And so he did, after a fantastic race he left the Ethiopians and Kenyans behind and took another gold medal for Uganda.

The year 2015 started off great for Stephen, as he took the silver medal in the Tokyo Marathon and improved the Ugandan NR to 2:06:33.
